  Walks & Trails

Seychelles; often known as ‘The World’s Gem” is today one of the few remaining places in the world where exotic flora and fauna flourish in their natural habitat. The special flora and fauna and a unique forest make Mahe, Praslin and Silhouette ideal for walking tours.

Almost 50% of the islands landmass is protected, making Seychelles a natural heaven and home to some of the rarest specimens in the world, including the Scops owl, Jelly tree and the world famous Coco De Mer. Seychelles is home to one of the tiniest frogs in the world, the Sooglossus gardineri and other endemic species such as the bulbul (endemic bird), chameleon, leaf insect, stick insect and pitcher plants.

Well marked nature trails introduce hikers and nature lovers to such spectacular beauty. Guided walks are carefully selected and by going at a slow and easy pace, you are sure to enjoy ever second of the scenic views and unique features.

Some of our popular trails are:

On Mahe:

Anse Major Nature Trail – 2.4km
This trail allows you to combine walking with relaxation on a secluded beach. The coastal path is situated About 50m above sea level and passes through ‘glacis’ landscapes where boulders and large expanses of granite rock predominate. These landscapes are key characteristics of Seychelles Geology and have a specialized vegetation. The ‘anse’ (which means beach in Creole) is situated at the mouth of the stream called Riviere Major, hence the name Anse Major.

Morne Blanc Nature Trail -1 km
This trail is basically a continuous climb from a high starting point in the Morne Seychellois National Park, to the top of the prominent mountain in the west of Mahe, characterized by cloud forest but affording splendid views on a good day! The initial part of the trail passes through an old tea plantation where Lemon Grass (Citronelle) also grows. There are brief views over the surrounding hills and towards the sea and nearby islands. There is an interesting patch of endemic plants such as the Vacoa Paradsol (Pandanus hornei). Most of these plants are encountered higher up the trail.

Mare Aux Cochons Trail – between 7 -10 km (depending on route taken)
The Mare aux Cochons nature trails is a series of interlinked trails, with the upland Valley of Mare aux Cochons as the focus. Whichever path you choose to follow, allow a whole day for your excursion as most routes take between 3 -4 hours of straight walking. Explore the ruins of a cinnamon distillery around the Danzil route, to the the fresh water marsh at the eastern end of the valley. From the central open area of Mare aux Cochons there are excellent views of the surrounding slopes (Including Glacis d’Antin, Mont Jasmine, Mont Le Niol, and Glacis Sarcelles).

Copolia Trail – 1.2Km
This trail starts with a descent through secondary woodland of Takamaka (Calophyllum), and Calice du Pape (Tabebuia pallid), across small rivulets and upwards. The endemic palms form an understory and it is worth it to explore the glacis to find the endemic pitcher plants (Nepenthes Perveillei). These forests are also the habitat of endemic birds such as the Seychelles Bulbul, Seychelles Sunbird, and Seychelles Blue pigeon. One of the tiniest frogs in the world (sooglossus gardineri) also lives there, well camouflaged but very vocal!

Glacis Trois Freres Trail - 800m
The name “Trois Freres” (Three brothers), given to the cliffs above Victoria, probably arises from the close proximity of the three peaks. Positioned at an altitude of 700m, the Trois Freres Cross is a traditional pilgrimage site for the catholic community on Good Friday. The first part of the trail passes through a forest, composed mainly of exotic species. In certain areas the forest is replaced by bushes of Cocoplum (Chrysobalanus Icaco), introduced at the beginning of the 20th Century to help control soil erosion. Here the vegetation is clear enough for you to get a first panoramic view over the east coast and the international airport at Pointe Larue. The surrounding cliffs are perfect nesting sites for the graceful White Tropic bird.

On Praslin

Glacis Noire- 1.4km
This trail leads to a fire tower built on a hilltop overlooking the East Coast of Praslin with a fine view of La Digue and surrounding smaller islands. It is one of the trails that allow visitors to discover endemic plants including the famous Coco de Mer (Lodociea Maldivica). The trail allows visitors to compare the vegetation of a forest affected by fire with an intact one. The main interests are the panoramic views and the landscape.

Vallee de Mai ( a UNESCO World Heritage Site)
The legendary Vallee de Mai is one of two UNESCO World heritage sites in Seychelles and was once believed to be the original garden of Eden. This hauntingly beautiful primeval forest is home to some of 6000 Coco de Mer trees. The Vallee boasts of all six of Seychelles endemic palm species as well as many other indigenous trees and is the last habitat of the endangered black parrot. A path that branches off from the main circular track leads up to a sheltered viewpoint that looks out across the valley, and a beautiful waterfall is also situated within the forest.
